For the upcoming assignment on creating a website that could change the world, a lot of things came to mind. The first thing I thought of when a heard the the phrase, “changing the world” I thought, this has to be good! It definetly has to be something that I’m interested and that could really impact people to help make this change. Well ever since I was my first year here at Bowling Green, I always had a passion for serving people. As Christian, God calls us to help make a difference in the world, so this assignment I could definetly relate to. So as I pondered on what I wanted to do, I recall a time when I saw this homeless women on the side of the street with a sign that read, “I have been sleeping in my call for a week, could you please help me.” I looked at her and saw that she had an injured leg trying to not stand on it. My heart just dropped, I felt so horrible, I wish I could help her, I said to myself. At the time I wasn’t driving that day so their I didn’t want to give her a ride when it wasn’t my car to offer. But I thought to myself, there has to be another way, someone should do something about this. Ever since then, I wanted to make a change. I wanted to help that person have a second chance in life, to have a second chance to succeed, another chance to start over. So I made it up in my mind that when I get enough money, I wanted to open up a non-profit organization called, “Second Change.”
So based on my passion to want to help people I thought it would be interesting to do my website on my future organization. The organization will help people on the street get back on feet and have a chance to start their lives over. They would have 3 months with the organization with free housing, food, and clothing. During the 3 months they will learn how to get a job, build up their resumes, help them find a place to live, and share with them the teaching of Jesus Christ.
In addtion to this information on the website, I would include ways that people could help by donating money to help the organization stay in business. I would also have opportunities that they can help by maybe donating food, clothes, and anything that could help the people stay off the street.
This organization would help change the world because it is giving other people a chance to live again. It’s helping the community keep the poor off the streets and into a secure and safe place. This will not only help the poor, but also everyone else because could help decrease a lot of deaths and suicides in the areas. It could decrease the chance of a child not attending school because of their lack of stability. This could change the world in many other ways, but I stress the fact that “it must start with us.”
In return I’m hoping my website will capture the essense of the message I’m trying to portray and people will be more likely to respond due to the success of the website design.

COMMUNICATION is not LITERAL Anymore
January 17, 2008“Computer programming is just like speaking a language,” digital designer Jonathan Pickey responded to how he relates to the networking of the computer. In “Becoming a Digital Designer” by Steven Heller and David Womack, chapter one talks about computer communication from the views of digital designers and how it is gradually becomes culturally effected throughout all aspects of the world. The software the designers use is being known as marks to their design. It’s what’s in these programs that allow designers to explore different options in design to make successful works of design.
Because the software is being used for design are all the same programs, there are many cultures that can compare with the digital design world. Sooner than later more designers are going to develop extra attributes to their own software that is going to make this “computer culture” that more popular. So knowing how to “speak computer” is going to be the norm less than decades away. It has become so dependable that even job markets are beginning to use online blogs for resources for interviews. The more one is informed of computer base language, the more likely for them to get ahead of the moving generation.
In the reading “Yes or No,” the author mentions the binary language of computers. Just like answering questions on an exam that only has two options, so does computer communications, only yes or no. The reading mentions how the binary language of computers has lead to some amazing efficiencies to where no one has to input ones and zeros but inputting shapes. The computer would be able to translate the shapes into members. Knowing what you want to design is through the knowledge of codes. Some codes can be disbursed for the use of the business. In the reading entitled, “Language and Community,” it talks about how sharing the code can help the people look in further options and making millions of dollars off their views.
In defining the meaning of interactive, the characteristics of interactive help better understanding the purpose and meaning, found in chapter two of “Becoming a Digital Designer.” There are six terms listed under the characteristics of interaction: Casuality, Affordance, Mapping, Learnability, Scalability, and Repeatability. Each one coincides with one another to define the term.
Casuality is the relationship between what you do and how the object or system responds. There is a dependency with the object or system responds depending on the designer. Nothing operates unless the digital designer is at work.
Affordance is suitable for the convenience of the viewers. Some are recreated by the lack of creativity and others are newly built on fresh ideas. Creating new designs helps make new ways to make life a little more convenient by creating better technology to make it easier and more useful.
Mapping is the process after casuality where one is know that they are the cause of the effect so they try to do something different to create a different effect or response.
Learnability is a continuous interaction where the learner is constantly learning new ideas, but realizing that one lesson doesn’t apply to the same one over and over again, but through practice are able to make mistakes but can recognize what you learn in it.
Scalability is knowing how to keep track of different items on one program and successfully managing the all of them equally. Web sites are perfect examples of scalability because one has to be aware of the capacity of viewer and knowing how balanced them all at once.
And lastly, repeatability which is a common term is when one learns something and is able to repeat it over and over again until it’s mastered. Some said that the best way to be great at something is if you practice it day after day, and one day you’ll get it.
While reading these sections in this book, I have come up to a conclusion that the digital world is growing more and more as the years roll by. Our job as digital designers and graphic designers is to stay on task with our surroundings. So much of our designs are being influence by other created designs and we as designers can become dependent on another person’s work of art and we don’t notice our own anymore. As a graphic designer, I want to be able to separate who I am as a designer and who I am as an individual without so much of technology telling me who I am. If I can keep in mind, I believe that I can flow with the improving technology and not get lost while I explore what’s out there.
